    Description

1600s or earlier Spanish COB coins, treasure of 7 pieces, metal detector finds !!
I am a metal detectorist and I communicate and trade with other detectorists around the world.
I clean the ‘dirt of the ages’ off of the coins myself, as I attest in my little COA.
This lot consists of 7 copper coins found in Spain with a metal detector, as shown, found at an old Spanish dock site.
Some of the coins have much wear.
I find the old copper Spanish ‘pirate’ coins interesting.
Although Spain was extracting much treasure from its colonies, the empire went into bankruptcy several times in the 1500s and 1600s, due to wars and overspending.
This led to several re-evaluations of their Maravedis coinage; in fact, if you have a copper coin dated 1641/1642, 1651 /1652, 1654/1655, or 1658/1659, it is likely a re-stamp of the date indicating a change in value.
For example, a coin originally minted as a 6 maravedis coin suddenly changed value to 8 maravedis when it was released from the mint stamped with the new date and/or value.
We see 2 dates on some coins.
A round circle stamped in an old Spanish coin is said to be ‘countermarked’.
COB coins are hand stamped or hand hammered coins.
An assistant places a hot glowing coin blank on a bottom die while the hammerman places a top die on the blank, then hits it with a hammer to form the (crude) impression.
They are often called ‘pirate’ coins since many were stamped in Spanish colonies and then shipped back to Spain, some falling prey to pirates.
The coins in this lot are unidentified as to the ruler at the time.
